The Artist Roadmap

Why you need an email list

It's all very well building up a huge following on Facebook or Instagram, and a great way to grow your audience, however, it is important to remember that we don't own those platforms. We are simply renting space, and they could change their algorithms at any time or make changes meaning we lose all our followers along with the time we spent building them.

Social media is great, although changing fast, and these platforms could technically vanish overnight. It's happened before with Myspace, if you're old enough to remember that!

This is why email is so important.

You own and control your email list. No one can take it away from you, plus, it's got a 20+ track record!

Mailchimp is great service for beginners, and lets you have up to 2000 subscribers for free. There are more advanced systems like Active Campaign, although I think it's best to start simple and grow accordingly. Some websites such as Wix have built-in email marketing which is a great option if you are just getting started. I've used Wix myself for a number of years and find it easy to use.

You can start making a list of anyone who is interested in your work. This includes selected friends and family, along with customers past and present. Remember, it is important to ask people's permission before adding them to your email list, and they must be an option to unsubscribe. Sending an email newsletter once a month or so about your work and what you are up to, is a great addition to your art business.
